While diesel engine emissions regulations are intended to help the environment, they have created a number of issues, particularly for exhaust systems. These unforeseen problems have left companies scrambling to find a solution, as well as trying to prepare for future changes. Fortunately, Lincoln Industries has taken the challenge head-on.
Government regulations began requiring diesel particulate filters (DPFs) and, in some cases, selective catalytic reduction (SCRs) on diesel engines in order to reduce particulate matter (PM) and Nitrous oxides (NOx). While these were major steps in reducing air pollution, the emission technologies resulted in high temperature discoloration and accelerated corrosion of the exhaust systems.
Working closely with prospective customers, Lincoln Industries’ team went to work to find the best, most cost-effective solutions to maintain the highly aesthetic appearance of chrome and black exhaust stacks. Applying a variety of ceramic-type coatings and plating technologies to the inside and outside of the exhaust stacks proved to be the breakthrough solution needed to maintain the aesthetics in this new high heat environment.
To prevent rust issues caused by the absence of soot as well as the requirements of SCR systems, Lincoln Industries began selecting and testing various metals and coatings to determine which combination would be most effective. It would seem like an obvious solution to use a more exotic stainless steel that is corrosion-resistant, but the cost of such a metal can be excessively high. Rather, Lincoln Industries once again used its extensive knowledge to find a better solution. The team developed a process for applying corrosion- and heat- resistant coatings inside the exhaust tubes to provide a solution that is effective, cost-efficient, and durable.
The Integrated Finishing Services™ philosophy employed by Lincoln Industries is instrumental in creating these types of solutions for customers. Adhering to the IFS philosophy is a critical component in finding the most effective solutions to meet demanding challenges.
As new issues arise in product performance, Lincoln Industries will continue to be on the forefront of finishing-intensive solutions.
